Global Citizen recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Global Citizen Festival on twin stages in New York City’s Grand Lawn in Central Park and Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana. Global Citizen is the world’s largest movement of action-takers and impact-makers dedicated to ending extreme poverty NOW.
This year’s milestone campaign culminated in over $2.4 billion in commitments in line with the organization’s urgent calls to action to end extreme poverty now. In addition, the event saw 2 million actions taken for girls and for the planet – more than doubling the record previously set by the international advocacy organization.
The festival was fantastic! The featured artists in NYC and Accra included Mariah Carey, Metallica, Jonas Brothers, Rosalía, Usher, SZA, and Stormzy. The artists were, as usual, at the top of their game and they entertained with a mission and a purpose on both stages. All the performers donated their time to this very worthy and very needed event. Tickets for the concert, by the way, were not for sale. They were never for sale. In order to get a ticket for the concert, and tens of thousands of people DID get tickets and showed up, you had to take action to get them. Actions such as signing petitions, calling local leaders, Tweeting congresspersons, sending letters, and signing pledges, among other things. Anything that could help the movement or raise consciousness of the Global Citizen’s mission, which is to end worldwide poverty – NOW.
The global leaders who also participated in the festival events were, among others, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of UNFPA, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. Even President Biden had something to say about this fabulously successful festival: “It’s great to join you for the 10th year of this festival. Thank you for building this movement and making big things happen. . This is a whole new chapter for America and for the planet. And we have to do a lot more. I pledged $11 billion a year to help poor countries fight climate change. Working with Congress and with your help, we can get this done.” – Joe Biden, President of the United States of America, via video address.

Earth2Green focuses on integrating the shared interests of people, places and planet through partnership.
